SURF Workshop 9 - February 2012

Members received updates and contributed to the development of two studies, both are the result of SURF identified research priorities:

- Infection prevention and control education for undergraduate nurses and allied health professionals, and

- Patient's experiences of MRSA screening.

A presentation was delivered by research staff from the University of West London's Richard Wells Research Centre on a current observational  research study. A speaker from INVOLVE attended to deliver a presentation and encourage discussion on research ethics.

Members also brainstormed ideas for recruiting additional SURF members and for presentations for the 2012 INVOLVE conference.

Presentations and papers:

Maryrose Tarpey, INVOLVE, Research Ethics and Public Involvement (presentation)

Public involvement in research applications to the National Research Ethics Service (publication)

National Patient Safety Agency, National Research Ethics Service, Statement on Public and Patient involvement in research and ethics committee review (publication)

Survey of Lay Members of Research Ethics Committees (publication)

Introduction to Surgical Site Infections (background information)

SURF Workshop 8 - October 2011

At the workshop progress was made on a joint SURF / HCAI Network research project focusing on Infection Prevention and Control education of undergraduate nurses and Allied Health Professionals. Members reviewed the results of an online survey and discussed the next phase of the project.

Members presented updates on research projects they have been involved with and there was a short discussion of member’s current areas of interest to inform future research priorities for SURF. Esmita Charani from Imperial College London delivered a presentation for SURF on antibiotics and antimicrobial resistance.

International Conference on Infection Prevention and Control

June/ July 2011

An academic poster which highlights some of the work SURF and the HCAI Research Network have undertaken was presented at the First International Conference of Prevention and Infection Control in Geneva. The poster explained the benefits of public involvement in HCAI research to the international audience and outlined some collaborative projects which have arisen from SURF identified research priorities.

Royal College of Nursing International Research Conference - May 2011

Representatives from SURF and the HCAI Research Network attended the conference in Harrogate to deliver a concurrent presentation on the collaborative work carried out in developing a joint submission for research funding. The presentation took place alongside a series of other interesting and informative presentations about the value of service user involvement in various areas of nursing research.

A copy of presentations from the event will shortly be available here.

SURF Workshop 7 - March 2011

The majority of the workshop involved working up a SURF identified research priority into a viable project. Members worked through the initial stages of developing a research project, facilitated by staff from the HCAI Research Network. Activities included reviewing desk research, looking at available literature, considering measurable outcomes, discussing the value of the research to practice and starting to think about appropriate methods for data collection.

In addition members took part in an exercise designed to refresh their knowledge of key HCAI causing organisms, were updated on a previous SURF research priority and were introduced to a new opportunity for SURF to collaborate with external researchers.

INVOLVE Conference - November 2010

SURF attended the INVOLVE Conference on Public Involvement in Research and presented a poster and talk on some of the group's achievements to date.

SURF Workshop 6 - October 2010

A presentation on basic microbiology, causes of HCAIs and innovation in medical devices was delivered by Jennie Wilson, Deputy Director of Infection Prevention and Control, Imperial College Healthcare NHS session on planning and conducting one to one interviews was delivered by a senior lecturer in research methods

SURF members had the opportunity to put forward their own research priorities and start thinking about the generation of SURF’s second collaborative submission for research funding. Feedback was also sought from SURF members on the development of the poster for the INVOLVE conference, and on materials being developed to raise awareness of the group among the research community.

SURF Workshop 5 - May 2010

The workshop aimed to update and obtain feedback from SURF members about current and planned activity. Members discussed the upcoming Research for Patient Benefit (RfPB) submission and identified potential roles for SURF members in the research process. SURF members provided feedback and suggestions to external researchers for projects on CAUTI and Hand Hygiene interventions. A short training session on planning and facilitating focus groups was also provided.

SURF Workshop 4 - 2009

SURF Members focused on identifying a patient centred research priority which has now been developed into a research proposal for the Research for Patient Benefit Programme (RfPB). If successful the research will be undertaken as a collaboration between SURF and researchers. The outcome of the submission is expected in November 2010.
